At CANINE REHAB OF NEW YORK we provide platelet-rich plasma and stem cell therapy treatments.
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapy are regenerative medicine therapies that aid in tissue healing. PRP has been shown to be effective in managing many orthopedic conditions, including osteoarthritis as well as tendon and ligament (soft tissue) injuries.
Platelets are cells that circulate in the bloodstream and contain two types of granules. One type of granule contributes to the formation of blood clots; the other type releases growth factors that stimulate other cells in the body to come to the injured area and facilitate tissue healing.
The patient’s own blood is utilized to make platelet rich plasma. It is a minimally invasive procedure and the PRP is prepared on site at the point of care. The PRP is injected into an injured joint, tendon or ligament. It requires light sedation, is minimally invasive and can be performed on an outpatient basis. A patient may require one or more injections depending on the severity of the condition. The pain relieving and tissue healing effects of PRP can last anywhere up to 6 months.
Stem cell therapy may not only treat the symptoms of the disease and slow its progression, it may also induce repair of the underlying damage by regeneration and replacement of the injured and diseased tissue. We collect stem cells from bone marrow and process them immediately in-house. They are frequently combined with PRP for optimal effect. This is also an outpatient procedure and the effects of the combination therapy may last as long as 9 months to one year.
